Unlocking Wallis and Futuna's Digital Future: Opportunities and Initiatives

Digital Growth in Wallis

The opening up of digital technology represents a catalyst for the development of new skills and industries while attracting companies due to Wallis and Futuna's favorable fiscal and social environment. The archipelago must emphasize its real assets, which include freedom of enterprise coupled with an incentivizing tax system featuring no corporate or income tax. This environment fosters economic growth. Additionally, Wallis and Futuna offers proficiency in French within an English-speaking region, a 39-hour workweek, a currency pegged to the Euro, an advantageous time difference with Europe, and relatively low labor costs compared to neighboring French territories, with a monthly minimum wage of 90,000 XPF (€754).

The enhancement of telecommunications infrastructure is poised to draw external companies and drive the development of a new range of tertiary sector services, as well as bolster local economic activity through Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Specific Objective 1: Fostering New Development Opportunities

The public sector plays a significant role in the Territory's economy, with public administration accounting for nearly 75 percent of total salaries. However, the private sector's contribution to wealth creation remains relatively low.

It is imperative to stimulate private sector initiatives and guide Wallisians and Futunians towards the creation of high-value-added activities linked to ICT development, including new tertiary activities, computer security, software development, and e-commerce.

The comprehensive study on the expansion of offshored tertiary activities will receive extensive dissemination. We plan to disseminate key statistics related to the digital sector, positions in high demand, and competitive roles identified by the National Observatory of Digital Professions.

To cultivate an interest in digital professions among Wallisians and Futunians, WallisFutuna.Org have been equipping the Territory's cyberbases with modern equipment such as 3D printers to transform them into collaborative digital fabrication laboratories (FabsLabs). Aligned with the territorial innovation strategy, the establishment of FabsLabs in the Territory aims to foster a collaborative digital culture and facilitate the emergence of fresh development opportunities.
